What is worship anyway?

Most churches have a regular service of worship on Sundays.

Many of those begin with a hymn or song that is referred to as a “call to worship”.

If we were asked to define worship, could we?

The word worship comes from an old English word “worthship”. This word conveyed the idea of acknowledging the worth of something. When we worship Jesus, we are acknowledging the worth of our Lord and Savior.

Jesus gave us two commandments. We are to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength and then to love our neighbor as ourselves. Our relationship with God encompasses all of the human faculties.

Our heart and soul (will and emotions), our mind (mental faculties) and our strength (physical) are to be sold out to Jesus. This is what God is looking for in a worshipper.

Jesus also said that God is looking for worshippers to worship in spirit and truth. This means that our worship is not faked, and is done internally, spiritually.

When we put this all together we see the picture. God is looking for authentic worship. This can be expressive (physical and emotional), contemplative (mental) and must be free (will). Worship is never coerced as that would violate the definition. True worship arises out of a heart that has been touched by God and desires to express Love and Worth to Him!

Today, we will worship God together. Eastland is a place where you can freely express your love and give worth to our King. Has God been good to you? Tell him! The Psalmist was very expressive,,,,,,,

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. 2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say this-- those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,”       Psalms 107:1-9 NIV
