Many of you know that two weeks ago, my daughter gave birth to Toby Lee. Toby came into the world at 9 pounds 9 ounces. He was born during the power outage that was caused by the Ice Storm of 2009. Shortly after birth, it was determined that Toby was not getting adequate oxygen. The problem was his heart and required heart surgery. The surgery was performed last Monday and Toby is healing quickly. We have all kinds of instruments that help us to determine what is going wrong with us physically. We are very grateful for these. Because of these, we were able to know about Tobys problem and get him the help he needed.
Is it this simple in the spiritual realm? Are there any instruments that can be used to take our spiritual temperature and diagnose our problem? And, if so is there anything that can provide the help that we need?
Here at Eastland, we focus on the 7 Disciplines of a growing Christian. When a person has these disciplines in their life, they are able to see their spiritual condition truly. The Disciplines not only help to diagnose but also provide solutions.
We give thanks to Almighty God for giving us the technology that solved Tobys problems. Toby will be home this week and begin the process of living with his parents. This would not have been the case if we had never known what was wrong or what to do about it.
We were committed to knowing the truth about our little boy. Should we not do the same in our spiritual lives? Should we not focus on the Disciplines of the Christian life? Jesus said knowing the truth will make us free.
